Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
